Red Sea Diaries 6 April 2008

Updated: Dec 28, 2019

Dear H,

With no work in the diary, a week of bad weather forecast in Dorset and no hope of seeing you this Easter, I got on the internet to see what bargains there might be.

That was 2 days ago. I flew into Sharm el Sheikh for the first time since we were here as a family for Christmas 1999. You were 6 Mummy learned to dive and you and I found a 'pirate treasure' chest by following an ancient pirate map full of clues. ( well by ancient it was secretly made the day before burned and stained with tea the night before. I wonder if you still have it. A lovely little mother of pearl jewellery box we filled with trinkets including an egyptian magic eye necklace to bring you luck. Not sure of its authenticity given what has come to pass.

Anyway, this is not meant to be maudlin so back to the present. I arrived Saturday evening and went to a dive boat called Typhoon. She is a 30m motor yacht and has 10 crew and 20 divers including me.

I am sharing with a chap called Derek. He is a nice guy and doesn't snore! He lost his wife at 27 to a brain tumour like Robin Ellis

Today we dived on two old wrecks and a coral reef. The weather is lovely but a little windy now as the sun goes down. we are in northern Red Sea with Mount Sinai on the horizon. I will be doing a night dive before dinner which will be exciting but not quite as exciting as the last dive!

I went into the engine room of the last wreck, a freighter called Giannis D that sank in 1983. It was very dark inside and I got a bit lost but luckily found my way out again before my air ran out.

We went to play with a family of 6 dolphins who were playing near the boat. Sadly they would not let get close Maybe next time. You are on holiday now. I wonder where in the World you are. I understand you went to Venice at Easter. I'm sure Mummy told you it is probably her favourite place in the World. I'm glad you had a nice time. Sweet dreams wherever you are. xxx
