A man is ship wrecked on an island. He thinks all is lost and cannot believe his bad luck. He is in denial. Later as he thinks over what has happened, he feels anger. He is angry at everything and everyone who took away his life and curls up licking his wounds hiding away, wishing he was dead. He is suffering withdrawal, mourning the loss of his friends and feeling guilty he lived. Slowly he starts to feel and think differently and reaches acceptance of his situation and sets about building a new life on the island.
The way he sees things impacts how he thinks impacts the way he feels and this effects how he behaves. Behaving differently, causes him to feel differently and to think differently and so from the depths of despair he now is able to again see things more positively.
He builds a shelter and lights a fire to keep warm and to cook food. Unfortunately the fire is too close to the shelter and a spark sets it on fire and it burns fiercely and with much smoke. Again he cannot believe it, "why now? why me?" He shouts. He gets angry and beats himself and then storms off to lick his wounds. Finally he calms down and looks back at the thick pawl of black smoke rising into the clear sky and walks back to see what he can recover before he starts afresh.
As he sets about his tasks, so he reflects that things happen for a reason and this time he will make a better shelter and build a fire further away. He also reflects that what does not kill us makes us stronger. The reason things happen is not always obvious at first and may take a long time for the lessons to be learned .
As he is thinking this he hears a horn blast in the distance and looks up and out to sea to where a ship is fast approaching; Her Captain having seen the smoke has altered course to investigate.
Some food for thought Little Nutbrown Hare.
