My last shift in the Intensive Care Unit Eastbourne Hospital around 3am. I had just realised that 30 years earlier to the day I had fought what I then thought was my last war. Then, like now I was left with a mix of guilt that I had not done more and relief to be going home safe and well. Going to war is no different in its effect on the mind and body as that faced everyday by the nurses and doctors fighting C19. For a year now they have been battling unseen and unsung behind the closed doors of ICU. The last month has been a humbling insight and a privilege to lead a team of veterans working alongside these amazing people whose sacrifice goes unnoticed by the majority. I hope we as a society are better at supporting them than we are our military when PTSD comes calling.
